USGS Quads - 1. Cimarrona Peak , 2. Granite Peak
There is a pretty meadow with nice campsites a couple of miles from the Poison
Park trailhead but unfortunately there is outfitter trash and camp here.
We were early enough in the season to miss these people who, by the way, often carry side
arms while playing cowboy. Don't fuss at a man about his trash when he is armed.
Actually we found three outfitter sites each worse than the last and it sort of spoiled
the trip. The next was at the trail intersection to the Divide Lakes and
Granite Lake. The third was above Granite Lake. See Renegade Outfitters.
We made our second camp a mile or two below
the lake as we were not acclimated to the altitude and we had slogged over some pretty
muddy trails in the rain. Otherwise, it would have been best to hike on to Granite
Lake. It would have been best to go past the Divide Lakes to the Los Pinos and
approach Granite Lake from the west side and avoid the climb to the ridge above the lake
on the east side. The trail around the lake is rough and outfitters controlled the
camps on the east side. Horses are not allowed on the west side of the lake.
If one climbs up above the lake this rock
is a nice place to enjoy the view of the Los Pinos river valley. We tried coming up
to the Divide Lakes using the trail on the west side of the Los Pinos. The
Los Pinos is deep and swift in the spring and should not be crossed on foot with packs.
